Building brighter futures with Girls Inc.
Article Written By Savannah Silvestre
During the pandemic, Rae Tucker was working at a domestic violence shelter when her perspective on life changed forever. Tucker is now the Director of Development for the Girls Inc. of Washington County. “Working in a domestic violence shelter was really eye-opening as to the types of struggles that women can experience in their lifetime,” says Tucker. “It became very apparent to me that girls growing up need to have better skills in handling potential situations.”
Tucker decided to transition to assisting preventative programs for young girls. Fortunately she found Girls Inc. which is a preeminent girls’ leadership organization equipping girls to reach their full potential.
According to the organization’s website, Girls Inc. was founded in 1864 to serve girls and young women who were experiencing upheaval in the aftermath of the Civil War. Over the decades, they have adapted to meet the changing social environments. They partner with schools and communities in 3,390 sites across the United States and Canada.
Tucker’s role is managing the Washington County chapter’s events and fundraisers. They host three main events during the year which are Grapes for Girls, Bonanza, and Muddy Mamas.
Muddy Mamas is an untimed 5k run and obstacle course that has been operating for ten years. The event aims to inspire a sense of strength and accomplishment for women of all ages.
In an interview on 92.1 The GOAT, Tucker describes the event as the cloud nine you feel when you are hanging out with your girlfriends. “Everyone in the community is hanging out and having a blast,” says Tucker. “Everybody feels so empowered to be there.”
The event will be held on September 20, 2025 at the Washington County Agriculture Education Center. The gates will open at 8 a.m. with the first wave at 8:45 a.m.
After the waves are complete, Tucker says “the party doesn’t stop”. There will be a beer garden, food trucks, and a pavilion full of vendors.
All of the proceeds from Muddy Mamas goes to support programming at the Girls Inc. of Washington County.

As for the future of Girls Inc., Tucker says that there are a lot of opportunities because the organization is “girls-led.” So when the girls change, the organization changes with them.
“The goal is to show the girls that there’s so much to life and there are so many different opportunities,” says Tucker. “Their energy is so radiant that it makes it the best job to go to every day.”
For more information on how to get involved, you can check out their Facebook at Facebook.com/GirlsIncWashCo or their chapter website at GirlsInc-MD.org.
“I started off as a part-timer just being there to help the cause, but then I discovered that the girls have so much joy that they’re bringing into the world, I became determined to make sure that all their dreams come true.” – Rae Tucker
